Engine Balance Shaft
A balance shaft is an eccentric weighted shaft used to control vibrations and harmonics in engines which are unnaturally balanced. The balance shaft acts as a counterweight and is weighted accordingly to oppose the harmonics caused by an unbalanced engine configuration. Balance shafts become even more critical in larger displacement engines. Since the balance shaft is part of the timing components a worn or damaged balance shaft can throw timing off causing poor engine performance or in extreme cases it can cause cylinder head damage.
